Much-loved cafe closes for good

-

A POPULAR independent cafe which has served Birmingham customers for 15 years has been forced to close for good.

Maison Mayci will not be reopening its Kings Heath branch as it is “too small to offer the social distancing required”.

Founded in 2005 by French brothers Remi and David Faveau, there is also a second Maison Mayci cafe in nearby Moseley.

The siblings revealed they had been considering closing the Kings Heath site before the pandemic hit so they could spend more time with their families.

Co-owner Remi said: “At the start of the year my brother and I had spoken about how it was difficult splitting our time between the two sites and how we wanted to spend more time with our families.

“As our bakery is housed at the Moseley restaurant, it made sense to close in Kings Heath – although extremely sad for us. When Covid and the lockdown happened in March, it reinforced our plan. We knew we could not reopen in Kings Heath with all the strict social distancing measures. The cafe is too small for that, we’d have to take tables out so would be operating at a loss if we reopened.”

The owners first revealed the news about the cafe closure on social media, posting: “We would like to thank everyone for the last 15 years (it feels like it was yesterday), we had a great time over the years and always felt welcome by the Kings Heath friendly community, some of you became great friends over the years...”

The news was met with sadness from many including Yardley MP Jess Phillips who shared her memories of the popular Poplar Road cafe online.

She wrote: “Opened the week my son was born and with our buggy it replaced the pub in our lives. “Made our wedding cake, our kids’ birthday cakes and was the beginning of the change in Kings Heath which now is full of independent cafes. We will see you in Moseley but I will miss it in Kings Heath.”

Food blogger Andy Hare wrote: “Sorry to read this. Thanks for all the coffees, cakes, bread and lunches! You’ll be missed in Kings Heath.”

In 2014 the siblings from Grenoble finished in second place on ITV’s Britain’s Best Bakery.
