Buy British and give EU dose of reality

- Russell Luckock Russell Luckock is chairman of Birmingham pressings firm AE Harris

EU commissioner Stella Kyriakides made it clear that although the union was 12 weeks behind the UK in ordering vaccines, they should be at the front of the queue.

Her attitude was very much in line with Brussels wishing to ensure that the UK must always suffer for leaving the club.

It is getting right up their noses that the British Government is leading the world in vaccinations, with France and Germany plus the rest of Euroland falling farther behind every day.

Boris gets a lot of stick for the way in which he has managed Covid, and some of it may be justified, but when it comes to vaccinations, he has done what West Country people call “a proper job”.

The Brussels attitude towards the British is also reflected in the way in which they are treating both goods and travellers to Europe since Brexit.

Nobody and nothing can enter mainland Europe unless all the paperwork is correct down to the last comma or full stop.

It therefore behoves us Brits to become very nationalistic, supporting our manufacturing base by favouring British-made goods.

Hopefully, on Budget Day, Chancellor Rishi Sunak will lay before Parliament a plan for business post Covid.

I sincerely trust that it will be an expansionist Budget, for another dose of austerity will do nothing to reduce our increasing debt mountain.

By expanding our economy, jobs will be created. I also hope that special help will be made available for all those entrepreneurs who wish to start their own enterprises.

The marketplace is changing, especially in relation to selling online.

If the public can be persuaded to buy British, then businesses both large and small will benefit, prosper and pay taxes.

As a generalisation, Britishdesigned and produced goods are of high and lasting quality.

Hopefully, our nation will grasp the virtue of patriotism, thus ensuring our future in the world.
