Phillips reveals hate mail she endures from trolls

- Jane Tyler Staff Reporter

BIRMINGHAM MP Jess Phillips has condemned her online trolls and shared some of the hate mail she receives for doing her job.

The Labour MP for Yardley was called an “imbecilic moron” in a rambling letter, in part said to have referenced the Duchess of Cambridge.

Ms Phillips has endured a torrent of abuse since becoming an MP in 2015 and previously revealed how she has beefed up security at her home after receiving hate mail and abuse online.

She published some details of the latest correspondence, noting how the author had at least used her preferred title, Ms. She wrote: “I’ve got a lot of time for the hate mail that remembers I go by Ms. It’s the small things.”

The letter writer had penned: “Dear Ms Phillips, you will resign with immediate effect.

“You are and always have been a vile, verminus scumbag. You are an imbecilic, moronic r **** d.”

The letter then went on to criticise her for comments she had made on Sky TV’s Ridge on Sunday programme earlier this month.

Although it was unclear what the troll was unhappy about, Ms Phillips said it could have been one of “many” things.

When asked on Twitter what the troll’s problem was, she replied: “They are many. Some beef about my referring to Kate Middleton as the future Queen. The fact I have tattoos. Something about the supreme Court.”

The 39-year-old mother of two has been subjected to a constant barrage of abuse and threats on social media.

But her latest tweet was met with a huge outpouring of support from Twitter users.

One, showing his support, said: “Love that you have the strength to see the humour. Stick with it Jess, (ooh, sorry, Ms Phillips) you have the support of millions. Your example is inspiring, your tenacity awesome.”

While another posted: “Wow, I can’t imagine how it feels to receive this kind of mail.

“No-one deserves this, especially if they do their job with integrity and compassion. Sending light and love, keep doing your great work.”
