Trezeguet is out for rest of campaign

-

VILLA winger Trezeguet is likely to miss the rest of the season as he requires surgery on a knee injury.

The Egypt international was forced off late on in the defeat to Liverpool on Saturday and reports in his homeland suggesting he had sustained knee ligament damage have been confirmed by the club.

“Trezeguet will now have an operation before starting his rehabilitation,” read a Villa statement. “Everyone at Aston Villa wishes Trez a full and speedy recovery.”

When asked about the problem after the match at Anfield, Villa

boss Dean Smith said: “He tried to carry on but, unfortunately, didn’t feel great so had to come off and was naturally upset and worried at what extent the injury is but only time will tell us.”

Trezeguet was included in the starting XI after his match-winning impact when coming off the bench against Fulham the previous week. He scored twice to inspire a 3-1 victory at Villa Park.

But he left the pitch in tears eight minutes from time as he made way for Jacob Ramsey at Anfield after a tackle from Trent Alexander-Arnold, who added insult to injury by scoring Liverpool’s last-gasp winner.

Trezeguet took to social media to send a message to the fans after the trip to Merseyside.

“Thank you all for your support, I appreciate your concern,” he wrote on Twitter.

Ahmed Elmohamady, his compatriot at Villa, hinted at a lengthy spell out for Trezeguet with his message to the 26 year-old. “You’ll come back stronger bro, wish you a speedy recovery,’’ he wrote.

Trezeguet joins Jack Grealish and Morgan Sanson on the injury list while Wesley Moraes is in the final stages of his recovery from a long-term knee problem.
