Labour deputy gets political tone wrong

-

DEAR Editor, After the shocking murder of Tory MP Sir David Amess there has been many words of kindness and tributes from fellow MPs and the usual calls for all sides of politics and that of social media to tone down the political rhetoric and words of hate.

We had the same sort of thing after the murder of Labour MP Jo Cox in 2016.

Seeing pictures on the news of Boris Johnson and opposition leader Keir Starmer walking together with flowers to pay their respects is all very well, but how long will this togetherness last? Forgive me but I am a bit cynical. Only a few weeks back Labour deputy leader Angela Rayner used completely unacceptable language when calling Boris and his Government “scum”.

You would have expected her to criticise the Tories but not sink to the level of those nasty individuals who hide behind online abuse.

She is supposedly an educated person in a position of responsibility.

This government has many critics, not least from some letter writers in these columns but they would not resort to such words to express their displeasure.

They have certain standards that Angela Rayner obviously lacks.

In the light of the recent atrocity I hope that she now reflects on what she said and apologise.

She is of course not directly responsible but her words of abuse certainly do not help.

As we have just tragically witnessed with this latest killing there are some, whether it be an act of terrorism or not, who are intent on going a murderous step further.
