Jayson is definitely ready to take next step - boss

- Joseph Chapman Football Writer

IF he’s needed to start a game for Albion, Jayson Molumby will be ready. The Irish midfielder came quite close to joining this week’s opponents Swansea over the course of the summer transfer window; a move that was dependent on their captain, Matt Grimes, moving to Fulham.

As it transpired, he stayed put and Albion moved for Molumby.

Prior to the September international break, Albion as a club barely caught a glimpse of him. He landed, put pen to paper, conducted the necessary in-house media requirements and then jetted off again to represent his country.

In the recent hammering of Cardiff, Valerien Ismael afforded him some minutes from the bench. Against Stoke City just days later, he was introduced as a late substitute for the injured Alex Mowatt.

The best we’ve seen of Molumby without question, though, was his half-hour cameo in Friday night’s win over Birmingham City. Again Mowatt, struggling with that bruised foot, was forced off and the young Brighton loanee impressed as the Baggies nicked a winner. With Mowatt’s fitness levels fluctuating, such has been the dependence on him this season to fill one of the two midfield spots, Ismael has confirmed that Molumby is raring to go.

“He’s very much ready, because he has the previous games he came in,” he explained.

“Every time we try to find ways to build him up, to make sure he has the connection with the team, especially in the game and our way to play, in the six position, is very strategic position for us. Lots of work and brain work for the six, but he improves week after week.

“It started in Cardiff when he came in, then Stoke he came in and was good and now against Birmingham he had a great attitude, so he’s ready for the next step for sure.”

With the injury that Mowatt is managing, and with captain Jake Livermore currently walking the suspension tightrope while he sits on

four bookings, the midfield that for so long has taken on the same appearance could well be about to change in the coming games.
