Man who identifies as woman bit nose off friend in clash

Savage attack left victim with horrific injury

- Stephanie Balloo

ABIRMINGHAM man who identifies as a woman has been jailed for four years after he bit his friend’s nose off in a brutal attack.

Kali Gills had been drinking with his friend at his Weoley Castle flat before the ‘retaliation’ attack on November 7 last year.

The 61-year-old used ‘considerable force’ to bite off the victim’s nose – leaving her housebound and her life destroyed, Birmingham Crown Court heard.

Gills, of Manor House Close in Weoley Castle, pleaded guilty to wounding with intent.

Gills, who was born male but selfidentifies as a woman, was sent to a male prison. He has requested to be moved to a female prison, which will be dealt with in the future as he does not yet have his recognised gender certificate.

Judge Avik Mukherjee branded the attack an “unwarranted, aggressive act of violence” as he described the unbearable pain the victim must have felt.

As Gills was sentenced from the dock, he told the judge: “Thank you sir for your understanding. I know I did wrong, I’m going to regret it for the rest of my life.”

The court heard that such was the violence of the attack, the victim had to have part of her forehead grafted onto her nose by surgeons.

She will need further surgery and has been receiving counselling.

The horrific assault had been sparked after the pair had clashed in the flat while drinking, though Gills had not been intoxicated.

Maxine Styles, defending, said

Gills’ lengthy jail sentence would impact on his plans for gender reassignment surgery.

“Both parties had been drinking, Ms Gills acknowledges she had been drinking, which led to poor decision making.”

Judge Mukherjee told Gills: “It is one of the most serious offences of violence that we have. It carries a maximum sentence of life imprisonment. It is the same sentence people can receive for murder or manslaughter.

“You attacked a friend of yours, it was in retaliation. She may well have head-butted you, but there was no injury. You weren’t afraid of her in any event.

“This resulted in an unwarranted, aggressive act of violence with limited provocation. It started in the flat, my finding is that it was you that started it.

“She left the flat to try to get some distance from you and her. You followed her out of the flat.

“I concluded you chose not to tell the court what had happened and described it as ‘something of a blur’ instead.”

He added: “The effect has been devastating – part of her brain had to be grafted onto her nose.”

He described the surgery as

‘remarkable’ but added that more surgery would need to follow.

“She has lost four inches off her forehead and suffers pain all of the time. She has been receiving, and continues to receive, counselling and is housebound. In her words she said ‘this has destroyed my life’.

“You used your teeth as a weapon to cause a permanent and irreversible injury.”
