It will be real honour to play for Poland – Cash

ASTON Villa’s Matty Cash is in line to be called up by Poland for next month’s World Cup qualifiers against Andorra and Hungary.

The Birmingham Post has been informed that Cash’s application for Polish citizenship has been signed at the Mazowiecki Voivode in Warsaw in order for the 24-year-old to obtain his passport.

Cash was pictured at the Polish embassy in London over the weekend where he gave an interview ahead of switching his allegiance to Poland knowing he qualifies via his mum’s parents who were born in Gdansk.

“I’m really ready for it, really excited. We’re going through the paper work at the minute and I’ve had the chance to meet the manager this morning,” Cash said.

“It’ll be a real honour to play for this country.

“I’ve watched loads of games.

“The fans are brilliant, passionate. “Hopefully I can bring that to the side, passion and 100 per cent commitment.

“That’s my game. I also know (Mateusz) Klich well from Leeds United. I’ve had many battles against him. We actually had a conversation and I said it would be nice to play with him and not against him.

“The squad’s brilliant with a great manager and, hopefully, success is what we’re going to bring.”

Cash also opened up on his meeting with Poland coach Paulo Sousa, adding: “Yeah, we had breakfast.

“Went through some things about the ambition and success we’re trying to build. We had a conversation.

“There’s a plan in place (for selection) and, fingers crossed, everything goes through and we can do that (for November).”

It is understood Cash’s Polish citizenship was approved yesterday by President Andrzej Duda after the process was accelerated thanks to Cezary Kulesza, the Polish FA chief.

Poland boss Sousa is expected to call-up Cash when he names his squad next week for their final World Cup qualifying encounters with Andorra (November 12) and Hungary (November 15), with Poland on course to finish second behind England in Group I.
