Driver jailed after friend died and one left paralysed

-

A SPEEDING motorist has been jailed for his part in two crashes that resulted in the death of his best friend and left another man paralysed.

Jordan Tedstone was driving his Volkswagen Scirocco at up to 70mph along Frankley Lane, Birmingham, when the first crash took place on May 22, 2019.

His friend, Kieron Mason, driving a VW Polo in the same direction, collided head on with an oncoming taxi and died.

The collision happened after four cars left an Asda car park in convoy. They had agreed to meet up again at a picnic area near Bartley Green Reservoir.

Kieron Mason, 23, led the convoy but was soon overtaken by Tedstone. Their vehicles were captured on camera driving at 67mph on a 40mph limit.

Tedstone and Mr Mason turned into Frankley Lane at around 1am where a taxi, with a passenger, was coming in the other direction.

Simon Phillips, prosecuting at Birmingham Crown Court, said the cabbie estimated Tedstone was travelling at between 60 and 70. The Polo then hit the taxi head on before spinning into a hedge and catching fire.

Mr Mason was stuck in the car and died as a result of traumatic head injury.

The taxi driver and his passenger were taken to hospital, but their injuries were not life-threatening.

While on bail awaiting trial, Tedstone was involved in another crash on June 13 this year, in Woodgate Lane, Rubery, Birmingham.

He had been watching an England football match with others in a pub and they decided to travel to a different venue.

But the 22-year-old lost control of his Mercedes A Class, mounting the pavement before demolishing a bus stop. Tedstone ran from the scene.

A 22-year-old man in the car suffered permanent spinal damage and was left paralysed.

Tedstone was found guilty of dangerous driving for the May, 2019, collision. He pleaded guilty to causing serious injury by dangerous driving for the June, 2021, crash. He was also convicted of driving with no insurance.
