Appeal for witnesses as two die in car crash fireball horror

-

POLICE have appealed for witnesses after a car crashed into a lamppost and burst into flames, killing two men in Birmingham.

Firefighters and paramedics were called to the crash besides Lightwoods Park, in Hagley Road West, on the border of Harborne and Bearwood, at 9.55pm on Tuesday.

Two men in their 20s in a Toyota Yaris were confirmed dead at the scene and a third man, also in his 20s, suffered serious injuries.

Det Sgt Paul Hughes, from the serious collision investigation unit, said: “We’re in the early stages of establishing exactly what happened and we remain keen to hear from anyone who was in the area at the time.

“We’d ask anyone who was travelling along the dual carriageway and saw the red Toyota Yaris before the collision, or has information about the crash, to contact us.

“We would appreciate if drivers could check their dashcams as anything which was captured could assist our enquiries.

“This is a devastating time for the families of the victims and we’d urge people to come to us with any footage, rather than speculate and share potentially distressing material online.”

Three fire engines and a total of 15 firefighters were sent to the scene.

A spokesman for West Midlands Fire Service said: “Three fire engines crewed by 15 firefighters responded from Smethwick, Ladywood and Woodgate Valley fire stations.

“They arrived to find one car well alight, near the junction with Winchfield Drive.

“Very sadly, two occupants of the vehicle were confirmed to have died at the scene. A third was taken to hospital by West Midlands Ambulance Service.

“Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this incident.”
