Companies ‘still need support’ as Plan B ends
BIRMINGHAM business bosses have called for more support as the Government announced it was to scrap almost all Covid restrictions again.
Working from home advice will end immediately and mandatory face masks rules will be dropped in England on January 26.
But Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce (GBCC) said firms needed a comprehensive package of support to alleviate concerns about the future.
Chief executive Henrietta Brealey, said: “Though the Prime Minister indicated that there is light at the end of the tunnel for the nation, it is as important as ever that businesses and individuals alike remain vigilant and play their part in stopping the spread of Covid-19.
“As we have learnt repeatedly over the past two years, the nature of the virus is unpredictable and uncertain, and the situation can change drastically with little notice.
“England’s move to Plan A – and the proposed removal of other measures such as the self-isolation requirements – must be accompanied by a comprehensive package of support to alleviate the business community’s concerns about the future – particularly for those that have seen their overheads and debt levels rocket as a result of the pandemic.
“Support measures should include reintroducing free testing kits for businesses, implementing enhanced financial support for businesses impacted by Covid-19, and maintaining the VAT reduction beyond March 2022 to help hospitality and non-essential retailers.
“As we emerge from the latest phase of the pandemic and the Government pivots towards a more hopeful long-term strategy, businesses must be able to return to a position where they can trade and grow in order to support the UK’s return to prosperity.”
On Wednesday the Prime Minister announced:
return to Plan A, with Plan B rules expiring next week
no longer required to work from home
people will no longer be mandated to wear face masks, though they are encouraged to wear one when coming into contact with those they wouldn’t usually meet.
relaxing rules of care home visits.
social requirement for those testing positive to self isolate for five days will remain – but Government will look to remove this before it expires at the end of March.
