RETURN OF BRUM-MADE ZOMBIE FILM

-

IT was the film shoot which kickstarted a blockbuster revolution in Birmingham – bringing a James Bond star and a Hollywood A-lister to the city.

And now you can watch a special silver screening of The Girl With All The Gifts, the zombie horror movie that was filmed in Brum – for free if you’re aged between 16 and 25.

Based on (Mike) MR Carey’s 2014 dystopian novel of the same name, the 15-rated movie starred multi-Oscar nominee Glenn Close (pictured) alongside Burton upon Trent’s finest, Paddy Considine, and former Bond girl Gemma Arterton, who played Strawberry Fields in Quantum of Solace.

The Girl With All The Gifts was shot in the heart of the Colmore Business District in May 2015. The production helped Film Birmingham to welcome a series of much bigger budget movies involving the likes of director Steven Spielberg, actor Tom Cruise and Oscar winning cinematographer Janusz Kaminski.

The story is set in the near future when much of humanity has been killed. A mutated fungal disease turns victims into “hungries” who lose their free will and then threaten survivors ordinarily protected by “blocker gel”.

A small group of seemingly immune children are having lessons about the periodic table and precocious pupil Melanie (Sennia Nanua) stands out from the rest.

Following an attack on their base, the film becomes a road movie featuring teacher Miss Justineau (Arterton), Sergeant Eddie Parks (Considine), Dr Caldwell (Close) and Melanie.

Parks tries to keep everyone alive but cruel biologist Dr Caldwell would like to dissect Melanie in the hope of extracting an antidote.

MAC Birmingham in Cannon Hill Park is screening the film at 7pm on Thursday, January 27, when producer Angus Lamont will discuss what it was like shooting on the city’s streets.

Anyone who is aged from 16-25 can see the film for free in return for supplying a contact email during the online booking process and completing a British Film Institute survey.
