VILLA head coach Steven Gerrard says he will be ‘on the phone’ over the next few weeks as he looks to continue to add to his squad.

Villa have been the most active side in the Premier League so far in the off-season, already completing three deals, despite the transfer window not officially opening until June 10.

Philippe Coutinho signed permanently from Barcelona, while the club have announced deals that will see both Boubacar Kamara and Diego Carlos arrive in time for preseason.

Gerrard has explained why Villa have moved so quickly to bring players in.

“We have tried to get in while people are sleeping and make some big pieces of the jigsaw,” he said. “We are really happy with where we are right now.”

Gerrard says he will now take a break – but also hinted he will continue working on other possible deals.

“It’s exciting moving forward but it is time to switch off for a few weeks,” he continued.

“Of course, I will be on the phone doing what I need to do and I am really looking forward to a full preseason and I am optimistic for next year.”

Kamara has lifted the lid on his meeting with Gerrard and the ‘feeling’ he had regarding a move to his new club.

The 22-year-old defensive midfielder left Marseille following the expiry of his contract and was the subject of interest from teams such as Atletico Madrid and Manchester United before choosing to sign for Villa on a five-year-deal.

“It’s my choice. I had this feeling with Aston Villa and I was very happy,’’ said Kamara.

“When the coach comes to see you at home, when he makes the trip, when he explains the project, his ambition for me in the years to come, I take this into account.

“Especially when it comes from Steven Gerrard, one of the best midfielders in the world in his position. It leaned in my decision. I can’t wait to join him to work.”

Meanwhile, Villa playmaker Emi Buendia has reflected on a turbulent first season at Villa Park.

The 26-year-old arrived for a clubrecord fee of £33 million last summer in the same window which saw Jack Grealish sign for Manchester City. The loss of their talisman led to a tough adjustment period for the club, which in turn resulted in a disrupted start for Buendia in claret and blue.

Despite not hitting the heights, the Argentinian’s quality began to shine through under the guidance of Gerrard. Buendia finished the season on four goals and six assists.

“We finished a season that was tough at times but incredible at many others,’’ said Buendia. “I have really enjoyed Villa Park and I have been able to feel how special it is to play with these fans. It has been my first year and I’m so happy to be here.

“I have also had the incredible pride of making my debut for my country. A dream come true.

“Now it’s time to disconnect and come back stronger. Thank you all so much for the support.’’
