Son who killed his own father locked up indefinitely
A PARANOID schizophrenic has been handed an indefinite hospital order after killing his father at their home.
Bradley Pye, 25, kicked and stabbed his father, Lee Gadd, in a prolonged and sustained attack after developing an “irrational hatred for him”, Wolverhampton Crown Court heard.
Mr Gadd suffered “15 sharp force injuries” following the assault at his home in Broad
Lane, Bloxwich, in the early hours of May 24 last year.
Psychiatric experts said that
Pye suffered with paranoid schizophrenia and he was determined to have had “low culpability” in the attack.
Pye pleaded guilty to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility.
He was made subject of a Section 37 hospital order, which is an order where a defendant goes to hospital instead of prison. Pye was also given a Section 41 restriction order, which is made when people are deemed to be a risk to the public.
Judge Michael Cambers did not specify a time frame for his hospital order.
But he told Pye: “In any view, this was an appalling attack, not least because it was a son on a father.
“Whilst it is accepted by psychiatrists in your case that, at the time, you were suffering from paranoid schizophrenia, this remains a serious and tragic attack. You had developed an irrational hatred of your father.”
Pye first showed signs of mental illness in 2015, when he was diagnosed with depression. However, his behaviour became “increasingly concerning” over the following years and Mr Gadd tried to persuade his son to seek medical help.
“The tragic irony is that appears to be what triggered your attack upon him.”
