Curtain falls on ‘panto institution’

-

TRIBUTES have been paid to a writer, comedian and performer best known for his appearances in panto in Solihull.

Malcolm Stent BEM who wrote, performed and directed pantomimes at Solihull’s Core Theatre for 27 years has died aged 78.

Malcolm mixed his gentle brand of humour with local knowledge to entertain audiences and theatre critics alike. He also carried out thousands of school and church fundraisers.

He received a British Empire Medal for ‘services to Entertainment and charity in Solihull’ in the 2017 Queen’s New Years Honours List. That year was also the last time Malcolm featured in a panto at the Core Theatre, but he did continue to perform his popular Malc in the Afternoon show at the venue.

He backed the Core Theatre for almost 50 years and was described as the venue’s ‘‘favourite writer and performer’.’ Theatre manager Lawrence Smith, who worked with him for 25 years, paid tribute to the ‘‘panto institution’.’

He said: “Malcolm Stent has been a friend and supporter of Solihull’s Theatre since the late 1970s. His skills and performances are woven into the history of this venue. We’ll miss his warmth, talent, friendship and support.”

Former Birmingham Post reporter Graham Young, who wrote about Malcolm’s exploits on numerous occasions, said: “Malc was a rare talent whose like might never be seen again. The supremely gifted all-rounder with rare modesty was an incredibly warmhearted singer, musician, comedian, actor, presenter, writer and producer.

“His love for family life shone through on stage where nobody could match his ability to turn shy children... into end-of-panto stars capable of bringing the house down.”
