Closure of TK Maxx store a blow for town

-

COUNCIL chiefs have said the departure of a much-loved and well-used high street name from the town centre is “disappointing”.

TK Maxx has decided to close its Solihull town centre store in Mell Square for good after initially shutting temporarily. The high street chain’s prominent store abruptly closed its doors in February, leaving shoppers confused as the site appeared to remain fully stocked. It later emerged that the store had closed due a maintenance issue.

However, bosses have now made the decision to close the store for good, after weeks of speculation.

Solihull Council said it was disappointing and encouraged shoppers to continue to use Mell Square, which is set to undergo extensive redevelopment as part of Solihull’s town centre masterplan.

A Solihull Council spokesperson said: “We understand TK Maxx has decided to end the lease on its Mell Square store, following a temporary closure for maintenance.

“While this decision will be disappointing to many Solihull shoppers, TK Maxx, along with its sister store Homesense, will continue trading from their larger Shirley store at Sears retail park

“In the meantime, our property agents will continue to explore options for alternative temporary uses for the premises ahead of redevelopment which is likely to commence in late 2025.”

TK Maxx was a player in the town’s retail scene, taking up unit 4 to 8 of Mell Square shopping centre. the nearest outlet now is Shirley.

TX Maxx confirmed that staff from its Solihull town centre store have been relocated.

A TK Maxx spokesperson told the Post: “We temporarily closed our TK Maxx Mell Square store for maintenance, but as we near the end of our lease, we have sadly made the decision to permanently close this store. “All our associates will be offered roles in our nearby stores. We thank our loyal Mell Square customers who can still enjoy finding big-brand bargains at our TK Maxx or our Homesense stores at Sears Retail Park.”
