Fly-tipper is fined for wrecking country lane
Road completely blocked by dumped household rubbish
ASELFISH fly-tipper from Solihull who dumped a load of household waste down a country lane near Lichfield has been handed a bill for thousands of pounds.
Unwanted items including a bed, mattress, pushchair, rocking chair and cardboard were emptied in Barkers Lane in Swinfen, last August. There was so much rubbish left that it blocked off the road.
Adam Hamilton, of Elford Grove, Marston Green, was said to have shown ‘complete disregard’ for the
area by his actions. Swinfen is 16 miles from the dumping site, which was a further 13 miles from where the waste was picked up in Rugeley.
Hamilton, 36, admitted three offences under the Environmental Protection Act 1990 after being prosecuted by Lichfield District Council at Cannock Magistrates’ Court.
Hamilton was ordered to
pay a fine, victim surcharge and costs totalling £2,621. Council’s environmental officers traced the waste to an address in Rugeley where the unsuspecting householder had paid Hamilton £190 to collect and dispose of the goods – only for him to offload it down a lane.
Lichfield District Council warned anyone using the services of a ‘man and a van’ to be wary who they choose.
A council spokesman said: “Hamilton showed complete disregard for the environment and is now paying the price.
“Local people need to be careful who they give their waste to.
“Check that they are a registered waste carrier, ask where the waste will be taken to, and record their name, contact details and the vehicle that they use.
“Residents may not be aware that they could face prosecution if the council’s environmental health officers visit and they are not in possession of the details.”
