Christmas in the Black Country for Father Ted

- By GAVIN JONES

FATHER Ted may have left our TV screens, but he’s coming to a stage near you, and bringing his Craggy Island costars with him.

Oldbury Rep’s next production will be a stage adaptation of the cult classic Channel 4 series. Adapted by the Rep’s own Paul Marks, it is based around four of the TV episodes.

The show follows the misadventures of three Irish Catholic priests who live on the fictional Craggy Island, located off the west coast of Ireland, to which they have been banished after unspecified ‘financial irregularities.’

Fathers Ted Crilly, Dougal Mcguire and Jack Hackett live chaotically together in Craggy Island’s Parochial House, along with their housekeeper Mrs Doyle, who always wants to serve them tea.

Paul Marks, who is also directing the show, said:

“In adapting this politically incorrect series for the stage I had to step back from the quick-cut scene change TV style of the original and create a more sustained narrative in keeping with stage production.

“I also made the decision not to censure or over sanitise the original content as this would not be in keeping with the original concept of the show. So please be aware of this if you are of a ‘sensitive disposition’ or easily offended before entering the Parochial House!”

The production runs in Oldbury Rep’s Main House from Saturday November 3 until Saturday November 10, with performances starting at 7.30pm.
