Museum opens up AND FINDS NEW gems in storage
REGULAR readers may remember our visit a couple of years ago to a fascinating museum out in Shropshire – the Land of Lost Content at Craven Arms.
The museum of popular culture is a little gem, absolutely rammed with household items from down the decades, heavy with pieces that will not only bring back fond memories for Black Country folk, but featuring hundreds of items manufactured by some of our long lost firms.
Now that lockdown is beginning to ease, the museum has tentatively opened its doors, and owner Stella Mitchell has been in touch to let us know how she will be handling the post-covid era, as well as how you can take a peep inside without actually leaving your home. She tells us:
“Well, ‘Land of Lost Content’ Museum opened on the June 15, and we are now booking time slots either by phone, on 01588 676176, or through our website: www.lolcmuseumofpopculture. co.uk, in order that we maintain social distancing post-lockdown.
“In the first week we only got five people – which shows how worried everyone is about ‘going out!’
Film
“However during lockdown we produced over seven hours of film of all areas of the museum, which serve as an online virtual tour (a taster to see what we are all about – or for those who are not able to visit).
“We released 14 approximately ½ hour episodes on consecutive days, viewable in parts or as a binge on our website.
“I was curating my posters in storage last week, and found this amazing example (see opposite) concerning the sewer system in Walsall!
Display
“Just as well the Victorians put in place such important infrastructure! I am going to display the poster along with other Black Country items already in situ. “It’s so well worth a trip!” The Land of Lost Content is at The Market Hall, Market Street, Craven Arms, Shropshire, SY7 9NW. As Stella says, please contact her via phone or the website if you’d like to book a visit.
