Strange old tale from an exile in Wales

- Betty Horton, Llinos, High Street, Borth, SY24 5HY

THE Train To Else is an extraordinary first novel by Willenhall author George Romary.

Apocalyptic, hopeful, dystopian, funny, this is a book that defies categorization.

The eponymous train, rescued from cold storage in South London, is like no other as it begins its journey through a shattered Britain.

Its wildly eccentric crew adrift amidst the confusion of half-remembered, partrecognizable landscapes.

Enigmatic

Only Notjohn, their enigmatic leader, appears to understand who or what it is that has broken Britain.

He needs the train and crew to go in search of what he calls “something special.” But what that is a mystery revealed only gradually as the beautiful steam engine travels from the Greenwich meridian through the English Midlands and out west to Cardigan Bay’s secret waters.

Pursued constantly by the Jobbers – a group intent upon their destruction – the passengers and crew are forced to overcome all kinds of obstacles.

Dangers seemingly occur around every bend in the track until they arrive at their destination.

A seaborne village where the waters move mysteriously, the sky is thin, and a cataclysmic finale awaits.

George Romary was born in Willenhall where he worked with ex-offenders and in corporate training and education.

He now lives in Borth, Wales, where he works as a volunteer in the Borth Station Museum he co-founded.
