Season 1991-92

WOLVES finished one place higher in Division Two than they did the previous season, claiming 10th place with 64 points, 20 behind champions Ipswich Town and 10 short of a playoff spot.

They started the campaign pretty well, winning five and drawing two of their first nine games. Unfortunately, there followed a rather moderate spell between early October and late November, when not a single victory was acheived in nine starts.

Thankfully performances improved over the next nine weeks or so when six wins were registered, but sadly it was hit and miss from early February to the end of the season, as Wolves’ form stuttered somewhat.

Once again Steve Bull was Wolves’ top scorer, with 20 goals in the League

Race

In fact, they banked only 22 points out of 48 as the race for the play-offs hotted up. In the end Graham Turner’s men fell well short of sixth placed Blackburn.

Wolves’ full record was played 46, won 18, drew 10, lost 18, goals for 61, against 54.

The team’s best win was that of 6-2 at home to Newcastle, while Watford were defeated 3-0, also at Molineux.

The Wanderers’ heaviest defeat in terms of goals conceded was that of 4-3 away at Tranmere.

Once again Steve Bull was topscorer with 20 League goals – and his total included his 150th for the club. Andy Mutch netted 10, while both goalkeeper Mike Stowell and leftback Mark Venus were both everpresent. Albion, playing in the third tier of English football for the first time in the club’s history, missed out on the play-offs by three points, their full record being played 46, won 19, drew 14, lost 13, goals for 64, against 49, points 71.

The Baggies lost only three of their first 22 games and looked strong and powerful, but results began to fluctuate from January onwards. Nevertheless, with 12 matches remaining Bobby Gould’s team were still among the favourites to go up, even win the title, but results took a dramatic turn for the worse and only one victory was claimed out of the next ten.

And although the last two matches were both won, the damage had been done … so it was back to the drawing board!
