Classic family games get a new twist at the SVR

- By DAN SHAW dshaw@blackcountrybugle.co.uk

THE Severn Valley Railway has branched out into the games market after launching its own customised versions of family favourites Monopoly and Top Trumps.

These classic games have been adapted to feature iconic locations and locomotives associated with the heritage railway that runs for 16 miles through Shropshire and Worcestershire.

Players of SVR Monopoly can buy and sell their way to riches as they make their way around the board. Featured locations include the railway’s six stations, along with structures such as the Victoria Bridge and Falling Sands Viaduct. Pick up a Chance or Community Chest card and you might find yourself paying a fine because your locomotive is blocking the line, or collecting a bonus because your pre-departure checks are complete.

The specially-commissioned SVR Top Trumps game features 30 steam locomotives with close associations to the railway. Each one comes with a fact file and those all-important and competitive statistics, which you can use to beat your opponents, as well as building up your heritage steam knowledge.

“We’ve been working hard behind the scenes to create these very special games,” said Helen Smith, the SVR’S managing director. “We’re expecting a huge demand as these are unique products and will only be available through our online shop at svrshop.co.uk or at our on-site shops.”

The board game Monopoly was developed in the 1930s by Charles Darrow, adapting Elizabeth Magie’s earlier board game, The Landlord’s Game. The first British version appeared in 1936 with its familiar London locations. Top Trumps was first launched in 1978 by the company Dubreq, best known for making the Stylophone.

The SVR’S Monopoly and Top Trumps are available to pre-order now, and will be delivered in the autumn.
