- Clare Damodaran

Scottish broadcaster and writer Sally Magnusson is the latest big name to be announced as part of east Perthshire’s BOOKMARK festival programme.

The television presenter and writer will be appearing at the October event to talk about her memoir of her mother’s dementia, titles ‘Where Memories Go: Why Dementia Changes Everything’.

Sally’s mother, Mamie Baird Magnusson, was regarded as one of the finest journalists of her generation and in the book Sally writes movingly about a family coping with the impact of dementia on their mother while, at the same time, questioning how older people are treated.

The Sunday Times bestseller has been described as “an extraordinary and deeply personal memoir, a manifesto and a call to arms”, “a heart-rending and touching portrait” and “a beautiful and important book”.

Sally joins a number of other award-winning and high-profile authors who have already been announced as part of the popular autumn event’s line-up.

These include Maggie O’Farrell, radio presenter James Naughtie, conservationist Sir John Lister Kaye and cookery and food writer Sue Lawrence.

BOOKMARK festival chair Christine Findlay said: “BOOKMARK is very privileged to be welcoming Sally Magnusson to Blairgowrie.

“She’ll be talking about her memoir of her mother’s dementia, a topic which I know affects so many individuals in every community.

“We’re delighted that she will also be our special guest at a members’ supper on the Saturday evening.”

The main BOOKMARK event takes place from October 7-8 at Blairgowrie Community Campus.

Sally will be appearing at the popular annual event, now in its fourth year, on the Saturday.

The full festival programme and early bird tickets will be available at a special fundraiser, to be held on Saturday next week.
