Meigle’s big day stopped by rain

-

Damp weather meant Meigle were denied the chance to complete Sunday’s Davidstow National Village Cup final against Freuchie.

Visiting skipper Jock Wallace won the toss and asked his hosts to bat.

The Victory Park men battled well and Alan Neave and Roly Thorne got Meigle off to a fine start.

Tom Duff scored a fluent 73, assisted by left-hander Callum Leese.

Meigle ended on 206 for seven, with Charles Clark contributing 25 with the bat.

Ex-Scotland player Gourlay deserves credit for a disciplined bowling performance that was economical and claimed four scalps.

Rain was in the air and was steadily getting worse but Alan Neave bowled fantastically well yet again, and induced an edge that Leese clung on to.

Another chance went down to at second slip when Denis Christie could not quite hang on.

Skipper Iain Stewart had a direct hit run out as Freuchie looked to falter.

Freuchie were on 50 for two after 13 overs and were behind the run rate.

However, 20 overs of the second innings have to be bowled in order to generate a result – meaning Meigle must make the journey over to Fife for a clash on the Public Park as conditions deteriorated in the wet.

This Saturday, Meigle travel to play Stoneywood/Dyce II.

The newly-promoted outfit have several familiar faces in their line up and two overseas players brought in to strengthen their XI.

The second XI’s scheduled fixture, away to Gordonians XI, will now be postponed due to the Village final being rescheduled.
