Our crossing must be worst in the country

- Dear Editor Deeply Concerned Citizen Name and address supplied

I would like to congratulate whoever was responsible for the new pedestrian crossing in the Wellmeadow, Blairgowrie, for it must be the very WORST in the country.

The traffic in the Wellmeadow is very heavy at times but there is no ‘bleeper’ to alert pedestrians when to cross in safety.

To watch for the red or green ‘man’ necessitates standing side-on to see when the lights have changed for the way they are positioned is ridiculous and more suited to a contortionist.

In town council days, our local, unpaid, councillors would have walked around the town to see for themselves the dangers that existed for those who either chose to, or have no alternative than to walk.

The Wellmeadow can be a nightmare with buses, taxis, cars and lorries going through the town to destinations unknown or turning off to Tesco and the industrial estate.

Crossing the foot of Leslie Street is another hazardous operation, with traffic coming three ways and some at a ridiculous speed.

Upper Mill Street has its share too of heavy vehicles loading and unloading at the back door of a popular pub/restaurant and illegally and thoughtlessly parked cars frequently cause quite severe congestion problems which again endanger the pedestrian.

Many people, including the elderly, have no choice but to walk to banks and shops and Blairgowrie can be nightmare for them.

To get to the post office from the town centre necessitates crossing quite a few pedestrianunfriendly roads and it is a bit of a miracle that there has not been a serious accident.

When it comes to traffic, Blairgowrie is not an attractive place for visitors, many of whom park their cars and ‘walk around the town’ bringing much-needed cash to shops and restaurants.

We are fortunate with the many bus tours the Angus Hotel attracts but to get from the hotel to the shopping area has been made more difficult now the bridge crossing has been changed.

Money - or should I say the lack of it – is

usually the excuse given for not getting things done but in this case money, and quite a lot of it, has been well and truly wasted in the creation of a crossing which shows very serious incompetence on someone’s part.
