Church Due to Rev Tom Tait feeling unwell during the service at Bendochy, the Abbey Church service was conducted by Rev Dr Iain Bentley. After a quick return to his house for some props, Iain stepped into the breach to the relief of the congregation. He called everyone to worship and wished Tom a speedy recovery. The choir opened the service with the introit ‘Be still in the presence of the Lord’. In the first part of his address Iain requested the help of Jeff Brewer who was required to name the four golf clubs which Iain had inherited from his grandfather and with which he learned the basics of the game. The first was a Mashie Niblick which was designed to lift the ball, perhaps from a difficult bunker; the second a wooden driver to tee-off with; thirdly an iron to continue down the fairway and, lastly, the smallest, a putter. Each was one designed to do a different job. Iain posed the question: “Which club are you?” Following the hymn ‘All things bright and beautiful’ the readings were given by Bob Farquharson from Isaiah ch 65 v 17-25 and 2 Corinthians ch 5 v 16-21. Iain returned to the golf club theme in the second part of his address asking the congregation to think about their roles in the life of the church. Some will be drivers and be good at leading, some are like irons with different skills and uses but, perhaps the most important, are the small putters who have a gentler action but finally put the ball in the hole. God is the caddy and ready to be of help. Following the Benediction the organist Austin Wilkie played Prelude No 1 (JS Bach) and an Ivor Novello Medley, much appreciated by the congregation. Charity Shop Allan and Sheila Legge will be running the Abbey Church charity shop from July 4-16. Small furniture items, bric-abrac, jewellery, good second hand clothes, duvet covers, curtains, etc, are welcome. Donations for the raffle, tombola and baking stall are also welcome. The shop will be open on Sunday, July 3, from 10am to receive any items. Anyone unable to take articles to the shop can call Ellen on 07451 009398 to arrange collection. Pipe Band Coupar Angus Pipe Band practice on Mondays and Tuesdays in the primary school. Monday sessions run from 7-9pm and Tuesdays run from 7-8.30pm. Contact Pipe Major Kevin Douglas on 07518 801839. Pride of Place Volunteers will be distributing the town’s awardwinning hanging baskets, troughs and tubs full of summer flowers in Beautiful Scotland colours in the coming weeks. These will be the spearhead of PoP’s efforts in this year’s competition, and the attempt to regain the coveted Rose Bowl won in 2014.
