Still time to enter garden competition

Residents in Blair and Rattray are urged to have a go

- Clare Damodaran

Green-fingered residents in Blairgowrie and Rattray have been reminded that the closing date for the annual Blair in Bloom garden competition is Friday this week.

Locals are urged to get involved in the competition, which aims to recognise the hard work and effort of keen amateur gardeners in the town.

Entry forms are available in the VisitScotland Information Centre in the Wellmeadow, and the One Voice office on Upper Mill Street.

Categories include private containers on public view (Roy Sim Trophy), private containers not on public view (TSB Trophy), best hanging basket, best feature in a residential garden (J&E Christie Trophy), best summer bedding in a small garden (Moyness Cup), best vegetable garden (Merchant’s Trophy), best garden (Nationwide Trophy), business premises (Waverly Stationery Rose Bowl) and establishment providing tourist accommodation (Rosemount Golf Hotel Trophy).

Blair in Bloom chair Helen McCann said: “Our annual gardens competition is always a great event and contributes greatly to creating a good overall impression of the town.

“And, by entering the competition, people are also demonstrating their support for Blair in Bloom and community involvement, which all helps the town’s chances in the Take a Pride in Perthshire and Beautiful Scotland competitions

“We are looking forward to getting as many entries as possible this year.”

Judging for the regional and national bloom competitions takes place in Blairgowrie on August 5 and August 10 and Helen is keen to encourage residents and business owners to keep their gardens and shop fronts as tidy as possible for the judging.

She also asked for anyone who would be able to help out keeping the town tidy and litterfree to contact her, or to join in with the weekly Blair in Bloom work parties. Volunteers meet every Monday at 10am in the Wellmeadow.

Helen also thanked all the local businesses who had supported the award-winning environmental group’s work by sponsoring hanging baskets.

VisitScotland visitor services adviser, Gail Robertson, said: “The volunteers from Blair in Bloom do a wonderful job and we are delighted to support them by having the competition entry forms in the office.

“It is a lovely community competition and visitors to the town often comment on the fabulous floral displays here, with some even coming back to visit again and again.”

Entries to the garden competition must be within a twomile radius of the Wellmeadow.

Completed entry forms must be returned to the VisitScotland Information Centre by July 22.

Entries will be judged the following week.

As well as the garden competition, there is also a photography competition.

There are two categories, one for under 18s and one for those over the age of 18, and up to three photographs may be submitted by each person.

The next Blair in Bloom committee meeting is on Tuesday, August 2 at 7.30pm.

Contact Helen on 01250 874000 for any further information.
