Charity waxing is part of the fun at Meigle Cricket Club

- David Phillips

Meigle Cricket Club held another successful six-a-side competition at the Victory Park on Sunday.

The event was held in good weather with some sunshine, although there was a bit of chill later in the afternoon.

There was lots of good cricket throughout the afternoon, all of it played in a good spirit.

There was also much for the entertainment of spectators, including a barbecue. The fun of the afternoon was added to by the laughter of children who enjoyed Kevin’s bouncy castles.

The six-a-side final was won by the Tom Duff VI which beat the Bob Edington Six by three wickets. Bob Edington Six 60, Tom Duff VI 64 for two.

The Edington Six built a promising base but lost several quick wickets, including the most cruel dismissal of all when Neil Wimberley was run out without facing a delivery.

Happier highlights of the final were two cleanly hit sixes by Warren Sutherland which helped earn him the man of the match award.

Members of the Tom Duff VI team were: Tom Duff (captain), Fran Bell, Chris Dickson, Damian Gilkes, Murray Scott and Warren Sutherland.

Bob Edington’s Six comprised Bob Edington (captain), Peter Bruce, Charles Clark, Andrew Douglas, Duncan Stackhouse, Roland Thorne, Neil Wimberley.

The cup and medals were presented to the winning team by club president Bill Morton, who congratulated the winners and thanked all who took part and helped make the day run smoothly as scorers and or umpires. Mr Morton observed that Tom Duff had been on winning sides in 2012 and 2014.

Before the final the club held a ninea-side match involving players from its junior section.

This showed there are a number of young players with promise and potential.

Some of the bowlers adapted better than others to the longer pitch-length, something which the organisers are likely to look at for next year following this year’s successful introduction.

This gave the young players the experience of playing before slightly larger crowds.

The cricket sixes were held in conjunction with the Great Meigle BakeOff, which was judged by Vicky Neave.

She announced the winner as Skye Sturrock, who entered with a lemon drizzle cake.

Iain Stewart presented awards to the winners, and spectators were invited to make their owned judging decisions on the cakes and other delicacies entered.

Mr Stewart also thanked all who helped with the bake-off, and expressed the club’s thanks to all who entered and supported the event.
