Charity shop raising funds for foodbank lift

Base needs support

- Clare Damodaran

A charity shop is being held in the former Howe’s premises in Blairgowrie this month to raise money for Perth and Kinross Foodbank.

The foodbank recently moved from Back Wynd in Bridgend to Cutlog Vennel in Perth when the lease at Back Wynd ended.

The new premises, just off the Fair City’s High Street, has the advantage of being over only two floors, rather than three, with ground level access for clients.

The weighing and sorting of the donated food, however, takes place on the first floor and the lift between the floors has not worked for many years.

The organisers and volunteers at the distribution centre in Blairgowrie would like to help get the lift restored to working order as many of them have experienced carrying the packed food boxes up the flight of stairs - and proceeds from the charity shop will contribute to that goal.

The shop will take place from August 26 to September 2.

Donations of any bric-abrac, books or furniture would be gratefully received. Contact Anna Bowman on 07974 810055 to arrange collection.

Volunteers are also required to set up the shop and to serve.

The foodbank benefited from a neighbourhood food collection at Tesco in Blairgowrie earlier in the summer.

Shoppers donated 1203 kilogrammes of food and £263.75 in cash.

Foodbank manager Les Paskin thanked Tesco and their staff, their customers and the volunteers who helped over the three days of the collection.

He said: “This was an excellent result and will help greatly in restocking the stock of food at Perth and Kinross Foodbank, where the parcels are made up for issue to clients of the distribution centre in Blairgowrie.”
