Sobering video is seen by pub staff

Campaign shows good night turning bad

- Melanie Bonn

A new video showing how one too many drinks can ruin not just a night out is being shown to east Perthshire bar staff in a new safety campaign.

Best Bar None Scotland (BBNS), a nationwide scheme for pubs, bars and clubs, has the backing of major drinks companies, trade organisations and police.

With worrying stories constantly in the news, Best Bar None Scotland wants to highlight that when people allow alcohol to lower their guard it throws up issues of vulnerability and social responsibility.

The video a “Good Night Out…?” is the first stage of a new hardhitting campaign showing the human stories where too much alcohol is a factor. It also highlights where bystanders, including staff in the licensed trade, could have intervened and made a difference.

The footage follows three different people on a night out who become vulnerable from drinking alcohol.

One of them, 17-year-old Amy, becomes the victim of a sexual assault, while in another scenario, a young man becomes a victim of his own bad decision-making. In the third story, a woman finds herself at risk after partying with work colleagues.

After each story, the video shows the bar staff and members of the public who could have intervened to produce a different outcome.

Following the video release, a code of practice is being sent to BBNS members, setting out guidelines for staff in licensed premises and how they can intervene and make a positive impact.
