Town ready for big weekend
Blair all set for Braemar Day and Highland Games
The winners of the second annual Berries and Cherries Jam Competition were announced at this month’s Blairgowrie Community Market, which took place in the Wellmeadow on Saturday.
August was the first anniversary of the launch of the Berries and Cherries Tartan and to celebrate Strathmore and the Glens Rural Partnership, in collaboration with the Blairgowrie and East Perthshire Love to Eat project, held the popular jam-making competition once again.
The overall winner of the competition – judged by Aileen Davidson, chair of the Strathmore and the Glens Rural Partnership, and Morag Young, chair of Blairgowrie and Rattray Community Council – was Donna Beedie from Thomas Thomson with her raspberry jam, which came first in the artisan jam maker category.
In the homemade classes, Ewan Walker from Blairgowrie triumphed with his berries and cherries jam; Marjory Carnegie took home first prize for her raspberry jam, and Elspeth Campbell won with her strawberry jam. Amy Findlay won the under 25 category with a raspberry jam, while Rosemount Care Home won the competition of the best jam jar label.
Master weaver Ashleigh Slater, from Warpweftweave Studio and creator of the Berries and Cherries tartan with Melanie Thomson of local soft fruit growers Thomas Thomson, was also at the market promoting a range of tartan products. In addition, community councillors discussed issues affecting the town at the market’s information point.
Volunteers from SCYD had a busy day running the Wellmeadow Cafe stall selling scones and chocolate fudge, as well as jewellery that the girls’group at the youth development centre have been making.
