By-election for second time at Alyth this year
Community council needs volunteers
A by-election is to be held for Alyth Community Council next month.
The move comes following the recent resignation of one of the elected members, Ryan Mollison, due to work commitments, meaning that there are now six vacant positions on the group.
This is the second by-election for the community council in the town this year.
Speaking at the latest meeting of the organisation, held last week in Alyth Town Hall, chair Amanda Blakeman thanked Ryan for his contribution to the community council.
She also urged members of the public to come forward and join the community council and have a say on local issues.
Amanda said: “We need a strong and effective community council in Alyth that can represent the different views of the community.
“This is a very interesting time for the town, particularly with the town centre regeneration, and we need the community to step up and make their voices heard.
“And with the introduction of the community empowerment bill, local communities are going to have more say about how money is spent in their areas.
“Alyth is a wonderful, vibrant community with lots of organisations and groups doing great work in the town but we still need people to get involved with the community council and represent us to PKC.
“It is not very onerous being on the community council, we meet once a month on the fourth Wednesday of every month for two hours, but it is one of the few statutory organisations in the town that can comment on issues such as planning for example or that the council and wind farm companies engage with, so it is important and very worthwhile.”
The by-election will take place on Thursday, October 13.
Anyone wishing to represent their community council must be 16 years of age, reside in the community council area and be named on the electoral register for the community council area in which they are standing.
A candidate’s proposer and seconder must also be named on the electoral register and reside in the same community council area.
To stand as a candidate a completed nomination form, together with a supporting 50 word statement, must be submitted to the Returning Officer by 4pm on Thursday, September 15.
Where the number of valid nominations exceeds the maximum number of members for the community council area an election will require to be held.
Nomination forms and copies of the Scheme of Establishment of Community Councils can be downloaded from Perth and Kinross Council’s website, www.pkc.gov. uk/communitycouncils or from the Returning Officer at The Atrium, 137 Glover Street, Perth PH2 0LQ, tel: 01738 475004 or email communitycouncils@ pkc.gov.uk
