Fred (10) goes to great lengths to aid charity

Youngster’s trademark hair chopped for good cause

- Clare Damodaran

A big-hearted Coupar Angus youngster is getting his trademark long hair cut for charity.

Ten-year-old Fred Kelly is getting the chop on his birthday, October 5, to raise funds for the Little Princess Trust.

The good cause provides realhair wigs, free of charge, to boys and girls that have lost their own hair through cancer treatment and other illnesses.

And Fred’s choice of charity is all the more personal as he is the same age as the Little Princess Trust, which celebrated its10th anniversary this year.

The trust was set up by the parents of Hannah Tarplee, a Hereford schoolgirl and the original “Little Princess” who lost her life to cancer in 2005, and since then has provided free, real-hair wigs to more than 4000 children.

Wigs made from hair donated by people like Fred cost the charity little or nothing to make, but if a suitable donated-hair wig cannot be sourced for a child, the charity buys wigs as close as possible to a child’s original hair.

The cost of purchasing one wig is, on average, between £350 and £500.

Fred says that he wants to help the charity because it helps children, and has set himself a target of raising £3000 for the trust – as well as donating his own hair.

With his mum’s help, he has set up a JustGiving page to help him achieve his target.

Proud mum Lara said: “Everyone knows Fred because of his hair, and I am extremely proud of him for selflessly having his hair cut for this wonderful charity.

“He’ll be getting it cut on his birthday at Coupar Angus Primary School and I’m sure it will be a very emotional moment.

“Any donations to his fundraising efforts that people feel they can make will be very gratefully received.

“Every penny counts and it would be great if Fred can achieve his goal of providing a huge financial boost to the charity as well as his hair for a wig – it would go a long way to help this fantastic charity carry out the work they do.”

The Little Princess Trust hit the headlines earlier this year when global superstar Harry Styles from pop band One Direction donated his hair following change of hairstyle as well.
