Seven-try away win victory without reply

- Sports Reporter

Blairgowrie RFC travelled to Dundee on Saturday where they handed Morgan Academy FPs a real lesson.

The hosts, who finished third in Midlands League Division Two last season, opted to play down the hill in the first half and immediately took control of the tie.

Pinned back in their own 22 for the first 10 minutes of the game, Blair put up an impressive defensive display to prevent the side from the City of Discovery from opening the scoring.

Morgan did have a chance to break the deadlock in the form of a penalty, but the opportunity was missed.

Blair came more into the match as the half progressed.

Young Finlay Ormiston made a superb break, evading numerous tackles along the way, following a successful line-out to score in the corner and give Blair the lead. The advantage was further enhanced by a conversion from the touchline by Stephen Souter.

The visitors continued to improve as the game progressed and were unlucky not to go into the interval with a bigger lead.

The men from JJ Coupar Recreation Park applied the pressure from the off in the second period.

Following a great steal, the ball was fed out to Liam McLaren, who burst through at least three tackles to score under the posts. The try was again converted by Souter.

From the restart, Blairgowrie captain Andy McOuat caught the ball and went on a mazy run.

He dodged past a number of tackles to score his side’s third try. Souter maintained his 100 per cent success rate so far with another conversion between the posts.

With Blair now on the up and the home side appearing to tire, young winger Rory Grant scored two quick tries.

The first was the result of some excellent handling by forwards and backs, and the second was a superb individual effort from his own half. Souter missed the first conversion attempt but normal service was soon resumed with a successful second.

Full-back Souter impressed with the ball in possession by breaking through the Morgan defence and offloading the ball to Tom Helyer.

He took the ball at pace and brushed off his opposite man to score in the corner. Souter did the honours with the conversion.

Blair suffled their pack and fielded all their substitutes with the game drawing to a close.

Centre Fraser Maxwell added a seventh try after a phase of some excellent handling, by both forwards and backs, to make the final score 54-0 in favour of Blair.

Man of the match points: Neil MacRae (3), Rory Grant (2), all other players (1). Top tackler: Fraser Maxwell.
