\Coupar Angus

Church Sunday’s service was conducted by Rev Tom Tait and the readings were by Anne Richards, from Proverbs ch 21, v 1-9 and John ch 10, v 7-16. Rev Tait spoke on the subject of ‘The Good Shepherd’ as mentioned in St John’s Gospel. Jesus said: “I am the good shepherd, I know my sheep and they know me. I am the door of the sheepfold; whoever comes in by me will be saved.” In this he was using a simple analogy that people in Palestine at that time would understand. The shepherd protects the sheep, rescues the strays, ensures entry to the fold is only through him and may even be prepared to die for his flock. In turn, the sheep have their needs met and know they are safe in his hands. Ministers and elders of the church are also shepherds in the wider sense of knowing their parishioners and being known by them. But, in this impersonal age and troubled world it’s become clear that all Christians have a role to play as a shepherd in responding to the needs of their neighbours and in spreading the ‘good news’ of the life and spiritual security that can be gained by following the teachings of Christ. In this way any ‘lost sheep’ can be returned to the safety of the flock. Ultimately, living life as a Christian comes down to good shepherding. Such work fulfils God’s expectations and is very rewarding. Austin Wilkie, organist, played Andante Poco Tranquillo (Alfred Hollins), Reflections by Percy Whitlock, The Nearness of You (Hoagy Carmichael) and Concluding Voluntary in G Major (T Pattison). Harvest Sunday is on October 2. All donations received will be sent to the foodbank distribution centre in Blairgowrie.
