Gearing up for day long charity cycle
Seven-hour challenge part of nationwide effort
The team at the Cafe in the Square in Alyth are getting on their bike to stand up to cancer.
October sees the return of the annual Stand Up To Cancer campaign, a Cancer Research UK initiative that raises money for research into new tests and treatments for cancer patients in the UK.
Fundraising efforts across the country culminate on Friday, October 21, with a Stand Up To Cancer fundraising telethon on Channel 4.
Alyth’s Cafe in the Square team are organising a whole host of fundraising activities on October 21 and the following day – and are keen for locals to join in the fun and support their efforts.
On the Saturday, there will be an exercise bike in the cafe and staff are looking for sponsorship to take it in turns to keep it moving from 9am4pm.
There will also be competitions including guess the mileage on the exercise bike, guess the teddy’s birthday and a lucky door game – with prizes up for grabs including lunch for two, £20 cash and afternoon tea for two at the cafe.
Staff will also be collecting donations for Stand Up to Cancer instead of tips, and there will be face painting and balloons for kids on Saturday afternoon between 1-3pm for a donation of a £1.
Ashley Boath owns and runs the cafe with husband Steven.
She said: “Cancer Research UK is a charity that has always been close to my heart, so we thought we would do something to raise funds for research.
“Myself and Steven, along with staff members Kerry Rocha, Alicia Gibson, Morgan Taylor, Eilidh Mclauchlan and Doreen Bryce, are all going to have a go at keeping the exercise bike rolling for the seven hours the shop is open.
“It would be great if as many people as possible were to come into the cafe, give us a bit of encouragement and support us in our efforts to help stand up to cancer.”
