The east Perthshire golf scene was recognised in the 2016 Scottish Golf Tourism Awards.

Blairgowrie Golf Club and Strathmore GC received accolades at a gala dinner held at the Fairmont St Andrews Resort, with the winners decided after a public vote totalling more than 33,000.

The evening brought the curtain down on the inaugural Scottish Golf Tourism Week, a networking event designed to increase overseas tourism into Scotland.

Blairgowrie GC managing secretary Douglas Cleeton accepted the award for the best value golf in the £50-£1000 sector, while nearby Strathmore picked up the accolade for best value for money course under £50.

In addition, the Red House Hotel in Coupar Angus was voted best small hotel.

Mr Cleeton said: “We are absolutely delighted to have won this award and thankful to everyone who enjoyed their visit to Blairgowrie and voted for us.”

Red House owner Alan Bannerman said: “Golf now makes a huge contribution to jobs and the economy in Scotland and we are pleased to work with Blairgowrie, Alyth, Forfar, Downfield, Strathmore, Kirriemuir, Dunkeld and Murrayshall courses to provide the best value stay and play packages.

“Congratulations go to all of the team at the Red House, who work tirelessly to ensure that all our clients receive the best individual attention during their stay.”

Strathmore GC’s director of operations, David Norman, declared: “We are absolutely delighted to have won this award, and also to have been shortlisted for a second award in another category.

“This win was the result of a great team effort all round and represents many years of dedication and devotion to everything we strive to achieve on a daily basis.”

Malcolm Roughead, chief executive of VisitScotland, offered his congratulations, adding: “To be recognised by the golfing public in a country that boasts so many outstanding venues is no small achievement and all the winners should be justifiably proud of their efforts.”

Tom Lovering, director of Scottish Golf Tourism Week, said: “It is encouraging to see such a wide geographical spread of golf clubs and facilities amongst the winners and nominees.

“This further demonstrates what everybody who works in the Scottish golf industry has long since known: that no matter where in our country you go, a first-class golf experience is always close at hand.”
