Testcharge

-

A 48-year-old Perthshire woman had her car seized at Perth Sheriff Court this week after appearing from custody on a charge of failing to provide police with breath specimens.

Susan Fowlie, of Woodford, High Street, Blairgowrie, denied the charge and will face trial on February 21.

An earlier hearing was set for February 2 and she was granted bail. It is alleged that on November 19, at police headquarters, she failed to provide two breath specimens for analysis. If convicted, her vehicle could be forfeited. Two pupils at Blairgowrie High School have been awarded £3000 from Cycling Scotland to help them set up a cycling club for girls at the Beeches Road school.

Fifth year pupils Hannah Waugh and Louisa Pearson, both 16, together with deputy head teacher at the school Andy Dingwall, applied for the funding for the school and were invited to take part in a five-day residential course in the school holidays last month at the Lagganlia Centre for Outdoor Learning.

Following the course, where they learned new skills including bike maintenance, mountain biking, leadership and first aid, the girls had to do a presentation to determine the level of grant that the school’s cycling for girls initiative would receive.

The money will be put towards buying equipment including bikes, gloves and helmets as well as training for members of staff at the school that will enable them to support cycling pupils.

Two teachers will be put forward for training in bike maintenance while a third will be trained as a mountain bike leader. All three will also be able to help pupils with Bikability training.

The girls are aiming to promote cycling amongst other girls at the school and improve the cycling confidence of younger girls in particular.

Hannah explained: “We want to look at how to improve access for girls to cycling and want to start a girls’ cycling and after school club at the school next spring.

“In the first instance we’ll be concentrating on girls in S1 and S2 classes and we will be working with organisations such as Sustrans, Cycling Scotland and Dr Bike to build essential cycling skills amongst the pupils and encouraging Blairgowrie High School to become a cycling friendly school.”

Louisa added: “There is a big
