Festive fun

- Clare Damodaran

Alyth’s famous community spirit had a decidedly festive feel to it last week as around 85 people enjoyed a Christmas lunch courtesy of businessman Sandy Sarwar.

Sandy, who owns the PriceKracker convenience store on Commercial Street in the town and recently opened a branch in Blairgowrie, teamed up with Airlie Street Hall committee member and coffee morning legend Margaret Aitchison and her team of volunteers to put on the free event for the local community.

Lunch featured soup, stovies and home baking provided by Margaret and her team and there was also musical entertainment was from John Young from Forfar on guitar and George Anderson from Meigle on keyboards.

Sandy said: “It was a great afternoon, it went very, very well.

“It’s all down to Margaret Aitchison and her team of helpers that it was such a success so a big thank you to them for all their efforts.

“Thanks also to the staff from PriceKracker for their help and Premier for co-sponsoring the event with myself.”

Sandy added: “Everyone had a great time, chatting to each other and catching up, which was the whole idea behind holding the lunch in the first place.

“I wanted to do this for local people to have a chance to get together and enjoy themselves at this time of year. That is a big thing for me.

“It’s all about the Christmas spirit and giving something back to the local community. It is also a nice way to say thank you to my regular customers in Alyth.

“I have already been asked if I am going to do it next year and although you never know what’s round the corner all being well we would hope to do it again.”
