Quiz brings guide dog puppy a step closer
Scottish-themed fundraiser raises £305 for good cause
Organisers of Blairgowrie’s second Name A Puppy campaign are another step closer to their target after raising £305 at their Burns-themed quiz night last week.
The fun event, which was held in Cargill’s Bistro and Restaurant on Thursday evening, saw several teams of four - many of whom were wearing items of tartan in recognition of the anniversary of the birth of Scotland’s national bard - test their knowledge of Scotland and Scottish culture.
And their fundraising efforts for Guide Dogs Scotland took their current total to £1741.39 - nearly two-fifths of the way towards their £5000 goal which will allow them to name a second guide dog puppy.
Lesley McDonald, owner of Cargill’s, is the driving force behind the campaign.
She said: “There’s been a real buzz about the evening and a great atmosphere, people have really enjoyed themselves, so much so that we are going to hold an Irish-themed quiz in the run-up to St Patrick’s Day for our next fundraiser!
“I would like to thank Deirdre and her team for their fantastic support and great organisation, everyone who donated prizes for the raffle, and everyone who came along and made it such a fun night - we hope to see everyone again, and some new faces, at our next event.”
Deirdre McVean, chair of Guide Dogs Perth and District fundraising group, added: “Once again we would like to say a big thank you to Lesley and her team for another great event.
“Thanks also to Shoshannah Webb who made up the quiz and was a very capable quiz master for the evening.
“It was really nice to have the president of the International Guide Dogs Association, Paul Metcalf, with us at this event too.”
Paul, who lives in New Zealand, commented: “It’s been a brilliant night and I was fortunate enough to be in the area for a personal visit and be able to come along and get involved - although my team came last!
“Guide Dogs Associations around the world rely on the fantastic support of our volunteers and the generosity of the general public and it is great to see first hand the work that is going on in Blairgowrie as part of their Name A Puppy campaigns.”
The winners on the night were the Barking Mad team, made up of local Guide Dogs Scotland volunteers, with The Blethers team in second place and the Four Candles in third place.
The first name a puppy campaign organised by Lesley raised £5000 for Guide Dogs Scotland and the puppy’s name, as chosen by members of the public, is Bramble.
The second puppy will also have a Blairgowrie-themed name as approved by Guide Dogs Scotland, chosen from the remaining shortlist of six names - Berry, Bluebell, Blair, Cargill, Newton or Rattray.
As before, people are able to make a donation of £1 and vote for their favourite choice of name.
Voting jars are located in various local businesses.
The next fundraising event for the campaign is a St Patrick’s Day quiz on Wednesday, March 15, in Cargill’s Bistro.
The quiz gets underway at 7.30pm and is open to teams of four people, with entry £5 per person. All proceeds to Guide Dogs Scotland.
There will be a prize for each member of the winning team and a raffle.
A pre-quiz set menu is available from 5pm to last orders at 6.30pm.
The quiz and the pre-quiz meal must be booked in advance, contact 01250 876735 or info@ cargillsbistro.com
