Salute to the Band Fun day at Meigle Primary as the pupils mark Robert Burns’ birthday
The haggis was piped in by Gordon Barton, a parent of pupils at the school
Pupils at Meigle Primary School enjoyed a celebration of Scottish culture last week to coincide with the anniversary of the birth of Scotland’s national bard, Robert Burns.
On Tuesday, the children all wore an item of tartan clothing and enjoyed a lunch of haggis, neeps and tatties.
The haggis was piped in by Gordon Barton, a parent of pupils at the school, and the address to the haggis was given by local historian and Scots afficinado, Donald Clerk.
The pupils also enjoyed making tasty Scottish treats such as shortbread and cranachan.
And in the afternoon, they all took part in a mini Highland Games which saw them try their hand at haggis hurling, wellie throwing and
an interhouse tug-of-war competition.
The school also held its annual Scots poetry competition where the pupils, who have been looking at Scots language since the holidays, recited poems that they have been learning.
The judges of the competition were acting head teacher at Meigle Primary School, Joanna Robertson, and local resident Marion Kaufman.
The winners had the opportunity to recite their poems for parents the following day as well when the school opened its doors for an afternoon of Scottish songs and poetry.
All those gathered had a wonderful time singing favourites such as Auld Lang Syne, Flower of Scotland, Caledonia, Three Craws, Ally Bally and You Cannae Shove Yer Granny Off The Bus.
