Boost for Men’s Shed

Scotmid donates £500 to newly-established group

- Clare Damodaran

The Strathmore Men’s Shed has received a donation of £500 from the Scotmid Community Fund.

And the grant has been put to good use already with the purchase of much-needed equipment for the new group, including a first aid kit and a digital projector.

The Men’s Shed concept provides those involved with a place where they can share resources, skills and information to work on projects of their own choosing and at their own pace.

The Strathmore Men’s Shed is currently based in the Wisecraft premises in Blairgowrie where they can use the joinery and meeting space for their various projects.

Sheila Downie, Scotmid north regional committee member, visited the Strathmore Men’s Shed during its weekly meeting to see for herself the work the group does.

She said: “We are delighted to be able to support this local project.

“Scotmid, which has two stores in Coupar Angus, has built its reputation on giving back to the communities in which they trade and we are getting more and more requests for grants these days.

“The Men’s Shed is a very worthwhile project.

“It helps to promote and look after men’s wellbeing and it’s open to people of all age groups providing a valuable social resource.

“It’s great to see the men here helping each other, sharing skills and just having a laugh and a chat.

“Although it is a well- established international organisation, it is really good to see it starting up here in the local Strathmore community as well, and we are pleased to be able to contribute towards setting the local group up.”

Chair of the Strathmore Men’s Shed, Keith Langelaan, thanked Scotmid for their support.

He said: “We are very grateful to Sheila and Scotmid for the very generous donation which allowed us to purchase much-needed equipment.

“The digital projector is so that we can play video demonstrations on health and safety issues, and also for use for entertainment, while the first aid box is just so we have our own kit - and just in case we need to use it.”

He added: “We would still appreciate donations of any tools or equipment to help us get established, and new members are always welcome too. Although Men’s Sheds mostly attract older men, some include men of any age and women are not excluded.”
