Jags look sharp against Dunkeld

Two on the bounce forThistle

-

Division Three Blair Thistle beat the elements to record a home win over Dunkeld and Birnam at the weekend.

Saturday’s win at Davie Park was the east Perthshire outfit’s second successive win, following a 3-1 triumph over Wolfhill seven days earlier.

The match looked likely to be one of many fixtures called off owing to the soggy conditions underfoot but volunteers rallied to ensure the pitch was playable by the time kick-off approached.

Proceedings were delayed as the referee did not arrive until roughly 10 minutes after the first whistle was due to be blown.

But Thistle wasted no time in getting things up and running when the action eventually started, opening the scoring after just two minutes.

The home side got their noses in front after some neat play down the right flank saw Dion Tolmie find Greg Page in the box.

Page retained his composure to slot home past the Dunkeld and Birnam keeper to ensure the hosts got off to a flying start.

Thistle were playing some great football and more chances came their way, although they were unable to add to their lead before the referee blew for half-time.

There was more of the same after the break as Thistle continued to push in the hope of gaining a valuable three points after what was their last home match of the season.

The boys from Blairgowrie increased their lead nine minutes into the second period when Paul Findlay made no mistake with a wellplaced effort from the edge of the area.

This gave Thistle – the area’s newest amateur side – some breathing space, although Dunkeld enjoyed more possession and tried to get back into the game.

Thistle always looked dangerous on the break and held their visitors at bay to win for the second week in a row.

It was another excellent squad performance, showcasing an impressive attitude and team spirit.

The style of football on show is also improving towards the end of a campaign which appears to be finishing all too quickly for those with an interest in the east Perthshire side.

Rory Myles was given the man of the match award.
