Weather wrecks league fixture

-

Meigle’s weekend ended up in frustration.

The SPCU Championship clash at Victory Park saw them on 89 for one before thunder, lightning and hail stones put paid to any further play when a young Mannofield side looked to be toiling.

With rivals Gordonians winning, they now take second place by a point.

Stoneywood/Dyce’s first XI are still top but Gordonians knocked them out of the PRD Architecture 3 Counties Cup last week.

The 2nd XI kept up their fine early season form by defeating Montrose at Union Park.

They won the toss and chose to bat on the artificial wicket, despite facing an outfield that was soaked. The match was reduced to 30 overs per side.

New signing Uday Reddy fell early but a good stand from ex-Blairgowrie CC stalwart Warren Sutherland and young Fergus Barron saw Meigle push on.

A massive six from Warren, which cleared the fence and went over the road, saw him reach 35 with Barron out for nine.

Charles Clark made 53 not out as the second string reached 145 for seven after 30 overs, with Gourlay taking two for 12 for the hosts.

Veteran duo Denis Christie and Gordon Croll opened the bowling and delivered tight spells for skipper Bob Edington.

Montrose got behind the rate straight away, with Christie claiming three for 25 before going off briefly for rain.

Alan Neave bowled leg spin and claimed five for 13 as the coastal Angus men reached 105 not out.

Ken Christie struck 35 for the hosts but was thwarted by some fine fielding from young Josh Edington.

The match ball sponsor was Sidlaw Decorators.

Meigle 2nd XI are now second in SPCU Central R&D Division 2.

They are next in action away in the league to Brechin Buccaneers on Sunday and then again against the city men on Thursday, June 15, in the 2 Counties Cup quarterfinal at Guthrie Park.

The side last won the 2 Counties Cup in 2000.
