A Rattray girl has won the chance to be a mascot for the Scottish women’s football team in the European Championships next week.

Amy McDonald, who plays with Blairgowrie and Rattray Community Football Club’s under 11s girls team, will run out on to the pitch with her football heroines as they kick off their Euro campaign on Wednesday, July 19.

Scotland take on England in Utrecht in the Netherlands in their opening match of the tournament, and nine-year-old Amy is one of just a handful of mascots - two for each team - that won the opportunity to be a part of the historic night through a competition run by championships sponsors McDonalds.

The Rattray Primary School pupil, who has been playing football for three years now, is very excited about the trip to Holland next week.

She said: “I’m really happy and looking forward to it. My favourite players are Lisa Evans and Gemma Fay, both of whom are in the squad, and I’m hoping to meet them.”

This is the first time that the Scottish ladies team has made the Europeam Championship finals, which is the second largest tournament in women’s football.

And, according to her dad, Lee, who is the head coach for the BRCFC girls team, it is also the first time that Amy has ever won anything in a competition draw like this.

Lee said: “The Scottish Women’s Football Federation invited all the teams in Scotland to enter the girls in the competition, so we couldn’t believe it when we found out that Amy had won. We’re really excited and proud.

“I coach the team that Amy plays in as well and it is just fantastic that this opportunity has coincided with the girls playing in the league for the first time this year.

“It’s great that someone from the club has won this in the same year, it helps to put BRCFC in the map as far as girls football is concerned.”

BRCFC is holding a free taster session from 5.30pm to 6.45pm on Wednesday, July 19, at Piggy Lane which is open to all girls aged from primary 2 up to S1. The big game will then be shown at the Gig.
