Oor Wullie will be chipping in

Iconic figures at eateries raise cash

- Clare Damodaran

Diners at two east Perthshire eateries are being joined by some very special guests this month.

Two of the iconic Oor Wullie figures from last year’s popular Bucket Trail are currently enjoying a visit to The Chippy in Blairgowrie and the Anglers Inn in Guildtown.

The Oor Wullie bucket trail was a major free public arts event that took place in and around Dundee last year.

It was coordinated by local artist Suzanne Scott of Whimsical Lush, a former pupil of Rattray Primary School and Blairgowrie High School, and featured 70 individually designed and decorated Oor Wullies.

After the Bucket Trail, the figures were auctioned off, raising almost £900,000 for Tayside children’s charity, the Archie Foundation.

Janette Gibson from Texas bought two of the Oor Wullies - Wullie the Cowboy and the Five Glens Wullie.

Wullie the Cowboy has already spent six months at Blairgowrie Dental Care posing for selfies with patients there, and is now residing at the Anglers Inn.

And the Five Glens Wullie is currently in The Chippy on the Wellmeadow.

Both establishments are owned by Blairgowrie businessman Phil McKenna, who is using the Oor Wullies’ visit to raise money for the charity, Cash for Kids.

He explained: “I was at the auction last year and Janette is a friend of mine.

“She has very kindly loaned the two Oor Wullies to us for a few weeks.

“She is really keen for them to be seen by people and I thought it would be a great opportunity to raise some money for charity.

“Cash for Kids is a charity that is close to my heart and one that I have raised money for over the years so we are asking people to put some money in Oor Wullie’s bucket when they are in The Chippy or the Anglers.

“And people should feel free to take photos or selfies with them while they are here as well if they want.

Phil went on: “Oor Wullie is iconic isn’t he? We all used to get the annual for Christmas, and the Bucket Trail last year was a big hit with people, it really caught everyone’s imagination, it was great and it’s nice to be part of that a wee bit.”

The figures will be on show for the next week or so giving Oor Wullie fans just a few more days to see them.

Phil added: “We’re extremely grateful to Janette for this opportunity, having them in the shop and the restaurant has been a real talking point for our customers and we’ve got to raise money for a worthwhile cause as well.”
