Cash to help homes reduce food waste
Perth and Kinross Council’s waste services team has secured funding from Sainsbury’s to deliver a household food waste reduction campaign in Blairgowrie, in collaboration with local community groups.
According to the council, in Perth and Kinross, on average, one third of the household general waste bin contains food waste.
This food waste is destined for landfill, but some of it would have still been edible if householders had better information on how to store the food, how to cook it into tasty leftovers or how to measure portion sizes.
The‘Waste less, Save more’funding will enable new projects and activities to be delivered with householders and schools over the next year in a bid to reduce the amount of food waste sent to landfill and save households money.
Strathmore Councillor Colin Stewart, convener for the council’s environment, enterprise and infrastructure committee, commented:“We are delighted to have secured this funding and the opportunity to work - with the support of local community groups – with the local Sainsbury’s store in Blairgowrie to help the community send less waste to landfill and save money on their food shopping.”
