New bins to aid recycling

- Clare Damodaran

East Perthshire residents have been issued with new, smaller general waste bins.

The move is the final phase of Perth and Kinross Council’s new waste and recycling service which has been introduced across the region over the last 18 months.

The council hopes that the smaller general waste bins will encourage householders to maximise their recycling in an effort to divert waste away from landfill.

A spokesperson for the local authority said: “Waste analysis carried out by Perth and Kinross Council of general waste bins showed that over 70 per cent of the material contained within an average 240 litre greenlidded bin could have been recycled.

“To ensure households have adequate capacity to present their household waste each property can have up to two large blue bins, for all their paper, cardboard, rigid plastic packaging, food and beverage cartons and cans, and two large brown bins for food and garden waste.

“Results to date have seen a reduction in general waste being presented at the kerbside of on average 28 per cent, while kerbside recycling has also increased.

“With the help of residents fully participating in the new service the council hopes that both environmental and financial benefits can be achieved.”
