Abbey Church Sunday’s service was conducted by Rev Andy Graham who welcomed everyone and intimated how well the Church charity shop was going. Andy was particularly enjoying the fun and camaraderie of the shop which runs until Saturday, July 15. The opening hymn was Jesus calls us here to meet Him, followed by prayers. The reading from 1 Samuel ch 16 vs 1-13 was read by David Chinn. This tells the story of Samuel anointing David, the youngest son of Jesse, who was then filled with the Holy Spirit. In his sermon Andy explained that Samuel was a prophet of note so when Jesse was asked to present his sons he chose the older brothers who were fine looking men. He left out his youngest, David, who was tending the sheep. God doesn’t look at outward appearances but at the heart. In David He saw a good heart and David must have asked “Why me?” We may also ask ourselves the same question but God calls us to do His will, not because we are good or successful, but He sees right into our hearts and knows He can help us. Musical offerings by organist Austin Wilkie included Consonanze Stravaganti by Giovanni Trabaci, Lullaby by Mozart, Pastorale by Battison Haynes and Marche Triomphale by Sigfrid Karg-Elert. Sunday service in the Abbey Church is from 11.15am to 12.15om. All welcome. The Prayer Group meets on Wednesdays at 2pm in the Abbey. Volunteers are required to help empty the charity shop.
