Coupar Angus

Abbey Church Sunday’s service was conducted by Rev Andy Graham and the readings by Jeff Brewer were 1 Kings ch 19 v 9-15a and Matthew ch 14 v 22-33. In his sermon Rev Graham referred to the readings which tackled the issue of spiritual faith. The second reading referred to the miracle whereby, during a storm Jesus walked on the water towards the boat in which the disciples were in. Jesus called Peter out of the boat to join him. At first, Peter also walked on the water but, as the storm developed, he grew fearful and began to sink. Jesus reached out to save him and admonished him for having little faith. People, too, sometimes question their faith and find themselves in crisis, but they should always remember that Jesus can deliver them from the ‘storms of life’ through faith in Him. So, whatever ‘storms’ people experience in their lives they should have faith in Jesus who will rescue them and prevent them from ‘going under’. This episode was so profound that the disciples finally understood that Jesus was not just another prophet, like Moses, but was, indeed, the Son of the Living God. Austin Wilkie, organist, played Autumn Eve by J Guest, a medley of Glen Campbell tunes, as a tribute, and Recessional Voluntary in E flat major by T Pattison. There will be no meetings of the Prayer Group at the Abbey Church during August. Meetings will resume on Wednesday, September 6, at 2pm. All welcome.
